Search Engines
So you have your new site up and running, but nobody is stopping by to visit it. What's going on?
A website that nobody can find is like a treasure without a map. If your website has been designed in the proper manner, it will slowly start to climb up the ranks of the search engines all on its own. There are, however, ways to speed up this procedure.
Every web designer has his or her own tricks. There are also companies that specialize in getting your website on the first page of the major search engines, but for most small businesses this is an unnecessary expense.
Each search engine has its own method of calculating your page rank, which in turn partially determines your search position. These methods are constantly changing, but the following are some of the things that you can do to help promote your new website:
+ Submit your website to the big search engines, like Google, Yahoo, and Ask.com. Often your web designer can do this for you.
+ Find your local online business directories and submit your website information. Halifax, for example has its own listings, and there are similar ones for different locales. The Internet is full of directories for all types of businesses. List yourself in at least a few of them, but do not pay to do so.
+ Make sure that your website has a site map.
